Necessary Information for SMT Production

  • A complete bill of materials, preferably in Excel, that lists all parts approved and substitutions.
  • A sample board is a nice additional item if you can provide one. If not, gerber files of the board are sufficient.
  • Testing procedures if we are doing any functional testing.
  • For EPROM’s, the program to load, or whether you will be doing that portion of the labor.
  • Pick and place centroid data must be provided, locating the center position of each component and fiducial.
  • Origin reference needs to be from the lower right hand corner of the board, and units need to be in millimeters. If in doubt as to what corner will end up being the origin reference for coordinates, please send us a copy of the artwork.
  • Coordinate points must be identified by component reference (R4, U12, J7, etc.). Multi-board panels must include centroid data for the board in the origin reference corner, PLUS a reference point for each additional board in the panel. Centroid data may be sent electronically in Excel or Word.
  • Circuit boards must have fiducials (2 minimum, opposite corners of board preferred), and fiducial coordinates must be included in pick and place centroid data. NOTE: boards with SMT components on both sides need fiducials on both sides of the board.
  • If we are ordering a stencil for solder paste printing, (this is usually the case) a complete set of gerber files for the bare circuit board.
  • The above is the absolute minimum information for automating production. Additional information that would decrease set-up and programming time includes data spec sheets for components (component dimensions) and especially component packaging specs if you are kitting components (e.g. - tape width and pitch, tray pack dimensions).

Other Notes

Understand that quick-turn quotes are not representative of the absolute best pricing that can be accomplished. Generally, for boards we need at least 3 weeks to get the best pricing from various suppliers, for cables we need approximately 2 weeks.

For all production: We absolutely need an engineering contact, not a purchaser or a buyer, for technical questions as they arise. This applies to every service from sheet metal design to SMT production.
